How to Install a New Garage Door Opener

Here’s how to install a new garage door opener.

Should You Call The Professionals?

Most homeowners will be able to handle any amount of DIY, but they aren’t used to doing more involved jobs. If you are somewhat handy and follow the instructions, then you’ll find that you can install a garage door opener yourself. However, if you’re at all unsure, consider reaching out to a garage door service company and schedule an appointment for garage door opener installation. This ensures that the door is properly installed, and you won’t have to worry about anything going wrong.

If you are ready to install your own garage door opener, read on to get the details.

Examine Your Garage Door

Before you do anything else, you’ll need to take a look at your garage door and see whether you can attach an opener to it. If you have a modern door, one that has multiple horizontal panels, it should work fine with most openers. If it’s an older model or is a door that is one solid piece, you’ll need to look into replacing it before you use a garage door opener.

Next, examine the condition of your garage door. Is it in good condition? You’re looking for issues with any of the moving parts, such as worn-out springs or bent garage door tracks. If there are any problems, you’ll want to address these first before you start attaching a garage door opener.

Choose the Right Garage Door Opener

Now you’re ready to choose an opener that works for you. There are different types of garage door openers available to you, so you can pick one that suits your needs best. For example, most people go with chain drive openers, as they’re the most affordable although somewhat noisy. Belt drive openers are somewhat quieter and are another popular choice. Screw drive openers are also well known for being easy to maintain.

If you’re not sure which one is right for you, schedule an appointment with your local garage door service company for assistance.

Install An Electrical Outlet

To use a garage door opener, you’ll need to have an electrical outlet somewhere near the opener unit. This is usually on the ceiling. If you already have an opener in place, then you’ll already have one installed. If you’re installing an opener for the first time, then you’ll need to have an outlet installed.

The best thing to do here is to call a licensed electrician to come and install one for you, safely. Then you can move onto the next step.

Put Together Your Garage Door Opener

Once you’ve chosen your garage door opener and bought it, you’ll need to put it together. When you get the box, take everything out and ensure that all the pieces are accounted for. Then, you can start putting together that main assembly. The instructions for assembly should be in the box with it. Each opener is different, so make sure you follow them carefully.

Install The Attachment Points

Next, you need to install the brackets and blocking that will hold your garage door opener in place. Again, your opener will have come with instructions for this step. Make sure you follow them and place these attachments carefully, both on the ceiling and on the garage door.

Attach The Garage Door Opener

Now the attachment points are in place, you’re ready to start installing the opener. Lean the motor compartment on a ladder, and then attach the other end of the opener to the garage door bracket. Once it’s attached, lift the motor assembly up and attach it to the ceiling bracket. Remember that it needs to be high enough that no one will accidentally hit their head on it.

Add The Extra Features

Your garage door opener has most likely come with extra features, which you’ll want to start installing now. These will again come with instructions, so follow these to ensure everything is installed correctly.

All garage door openers must come with a safety rope, which can be pulled to manually disconnect the opener. Attach the rope to the emergency release on the carriage. This needs to be low enough so that the adults in the home can reach it.

Many garage door openers will have a socket for a lightbulb, so install one now if you have one. It’s a good idea to buy a light bulb that’s rated for rough service, as it will need to withstand vibrations as the door opens and closes.

Next, you’ll have electrical eye safety equipment that you need to install. This ensures that the garage door can’t close if anything is standing in its path. You’ll have an electrical eye and a reflector, and they need to be installed on either side of the door, near the bottom.

Once they’re installed, you need to test the feature. Place a 2 x 4 of wood in the path of the door, and try closing it. The beam of light between the eye and the reflector should be broken, so the door should auto-reverse.

Finally, you’ll need to install the push button operation and other items, such as a keypad. Refer to the instructions to see how to do this.

Test The Garage Door Opener

Now that everything is in place, you can start testing the equipment. Use your remote to try opening and closing the door. In most cases, you’ll find that everything is working as it should.

With these tips you’ll be able to install a brand new garage door opener, making life a lot easier when you need to use your garage. Don’t forget, you can always talk to your local garage door company if you need help.
